Commissioning Week in Annapolis each May is unlike any other graduation in the state. Several days of parades, ceremonies and the Blue Angels flight demonstration lead up to graduation and commissioning, and the small historic city is filled to capacity. Access to the Yard is controlled and vehicle entry is limited, downtown streets are crowded, and bridges may close briefly during the air show. Families usually stay in hotels along West Street, Riva Road or as far away as BWI and Kent Island. Many Maryland high schools hold graduation away from campus at university arenas, county event centers and similar large venues, which means unfamiliar parking and a crowd from several schools in one day.
